Steel Branding Delivers New, Clean User-Friendly Redesign for the Texas Education Agency’s Website

AUSTIN, Texas (November 22, 2014) – Steel Branding, a brand-focused communications firm, designed a new website for the Texas Education Agency (TEA). The new TEA website is now live with added features, a more visually appealing interface and exhibits an overall user-friendly experience. The new site launched in November 2014 and has completed its beta period. In addition to a new design, the TEA website can now be accessed via a shorter URL at tea.texas.gov.

TEA is one of the largest government agencies in Texas. The TEA website provides resources to help schools meet the educational needs of all students in the State of Texas. TEA was looking for a modern design and navigation structure where users could find content efficiently, with a design that was scalable to accommodate future growth. The goal was to make TEA the most credible resource for finding the most up-to-date information on public education in Texas.

When users are presented with a website where they can easily find the information to the answers they need, they are more likely to view the organization in a positive way, regularly return to the website and be more involved in the organization. While the existing TEA site design provided access to valuable information, the ongoing feedback from users centered on the difficulty in locating specific information.

With successful identified web redesigns for large complicated government websites such as The City of Austin and San Jacinto College, Steel Branding’s government experience and branding expertise helped TEA develop a new website that highlighted a clean look and feel with the new site’s functionality. The project helped to represent the Agency’s mission in providing the most up-to-date information on public education in Texas.
“Our website redesign project aimed at much more than just making the site look nicer,” said Commissioner Williams at TEA, in an announcement to Texas Educators. “For more than a year, we have been working internally and with stakeholders outside the agency for a design that helps get people to what they are looking for quickly.”

With education being a key focus at Steel Branding, the firm made sure to work closely with different audience to get their insight for the redesign of the website. By conducting research to better understand usability and flow for all target audiences, Steel Branding created a content strategy and site hierarchy to allow for a stronger user experience, and redesigned the new site by utilizing Steel’s archetypal branding process to reflect the TEA brand.

“The updated TEA website provides a clear, easy-to-navigate way to find information, offers dropdown menus to the most accessed data, and pulls together information areas to help users get a complete picture or program,” said Trisha Fields, Vice President of Client Services at Steel Branding. “We also created templates for a mobile version of the site, and conducted user testing to provide feedback prior to launch after gathering insight and feedback from teachers, administrators, parents and TEA staff.”
